We are seeking an experienced human resource and governance professional. You will be able to help us improve our internal governance structures inline with the UK Charity Commission guidelines.

What will you be doing?

The School Club Zambia UK currently has 4 board members that are responsible for the overall management of our small but impactful charity. Our board have a range of skills that include safeguarding, finance, marketing and communications and project management. However, as we begin to develop our next 5 year strategic plan for our operations in Zambia, we have identified a gap on our board in human resource management and governance.

We are seeking an experienced human resource and governance professional with a passion for helping young people to fulfil their potential. As a small team you will need to be willing to commit to at least 2 years on our board and attend quarterly meetings which are currently online on Saturday mornings (four times a year). We also plan to hold annual general meetings in central London when it becomes safe to do so again. This is usually planned for when our Director and Country Manager are in the UK so that they can give direct insight from our projects in Zambia to our supporters and partners.

We do not require previous experience as a trustee for this position as we have a comprehensive induction procedure. We are also willing to offer training to candidates who have the passion but lack some of the required areas of experience for the role.

What are we looking for?

  • Demonstrate a strong and visible passion and commitment to the charity, its strategic objectives and cause
  • Be willing to undertake two reference and a basic disclosure criminal records check
  • An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship
  • An organised and efficient approach to completing tasks
  • Exhibit strong inter-personal and relationship building abilities
  • A willingness to be available for advice and enquiries on an ad hoc basis
  • Ability to foster and promote a collaborative team environment
  • Ability to commit time to conduct the role well, including travel and attending occasional events

Desirable Experience

  • Experience of operating at a human resource management or governance level within an organisation
  • Experience in completing administration tasks including high level note taking
  • Experience of charity governance and working with or as part of a Board of Trustees

Knowledge And Skills

  • Broad knowledge and understanding of the human resource and governance sector and current issues affecting it
  • Knowledge and understanding of the UK charity commission and their policies of best practice
  • Charity management expertise and a broad understanding of charity governance issues

What difference will you make?

As a board member for the School Club Zambia you will be part of an exciting movement to change the opportunities available for young people growing up in rural Zambia. Zambia has one of the youngest populations in the world but currently 1,000 young people join the job market every day with very few employment opportunities available to them. We are seeking to change this situation through our innovative model of self-financing schools; vocational education; literacy development and by addressing the root causes that prevent girls from completing school. To date we have reached over 20,000 children and young people, with projects in 123 communities.

We currently have a range of exciting projects that we are implementing with the support of our partners, including Comic Relief; the Scottish Government; award winning Fem-Tech company OHNE and TRG Plc. However, our organisation and our ability to keep reaching more children and young Zambians, depends on our ability to keep keep maintaining a high standard of operational practice. The role of the Secretary of the Board will be a vital role in our organisation. We envision that you will play a pivotal role in supporting our team to meet our ambitious new operational targets whilst ensuring we are governed within UK Charity Commission guidelines.
